Why I Published Those Cartoons
.... Our goal was simply to push back self-imposed limits on expression that seemed to be closing in tighter.
At the end of September, a Danish standup comedian said in an interview with Jyllands-Posten that he had no problem urinating on the Bible in front of a camera, but he dared not do the same thing with the Koran.
This was the culmination of a series of disturbing instances of self-censorship. Last September, a Danish children's writer had trouble finding an illustrator for a book about the life of Muhammad. Three people turned down the job for fear of consequences. The person who finally accepted insisted on anonymity, which in my book is a form of self-censorship. European translators of a critical book about Islam also did not want their names to appear on the book cover beside the name of the author, a Somalia-born Dutch politician who has herself been in hiding.
Around the same time, the Tate gallery in London withdrew an installation by the avant-garde artist John Latham depicting the Koran, Bible and Talmud torn to pieces. The museum explained that it did not want to stir things up after the London bombings. (A few months earlier, to avoid offending Muslims, a museum in Goteborg, Sweden, had removed a painting with a sexual motif and a quotation from the Koran.)

Has Jyllands-Posten insulted and disrespected Islam? It certainly didn't intend to. But what does respect mean? When I visit a mosque, I show my respect by taking off my shoes. I follow the customs, just as I do in a church, synagogue or other holy place. But if a believer demands that I, as a nonbeliever, observe his taboos in the public domain, he is not asking for my respect, but for my submission. And that is incompatible with a secular democracy.
This is exactly why Karl Popper, in his seminal work "The Open Society and Its Enemies," insisted that one should not be tolerant with the intolerant. Nowhere do so many religions coexist peacefully as in a democracy where freedom of expression is a fundamental right. In Saudi Arabia, you can get arrested for wearing a cross or having a Bible in your suitcase, while Muslims in secular Denmark can have their own mosques, cemeteries, schools, TV and radio stations.

BBC: Reporting Religion
This week Reporting Religion takes an in-depth look at the aftermath of the Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed.
A specially invited panel considers why the depiction of the Prophet is so offensive. What means are there for protest and dissent within Islam? The secular west prizes its hard-won right to freedom of speech so has this left it unable to understand the nature of religious offence? Is there a point beyond which freedom of speech cannot go?
The panellists include Irshad Manji, Fellow at Yale University and author of "the Trouble with Islam"; writer and academic Malise Ruthven and Adjmal Masroor an Imam and member of the Islamic Society of Britain.
Also taking part in the programme is the British philosopher Professor A. C. Grayling.

به نام محمد سنگ می زنند و می سوزانند. محمدی که من پیروش هستم پیراهنش را بالا می زند و از کسی که به اشتباه تازیانه خورده می خواهد تا او را قصاص کند. گیرم که روزنامه خطا کرد، به کارمند سفارت چه دخلی دارد؟ [+]
من منظور از آوردن داستان "تازیانه اشتباه" رو نفهمیدم. چون بخشنده گی رو که نمیرسونه. و اتفاقاً دقیقاً داره در مورد قصاص کردن صحبت میکنه. در بهترین حالت عدالت خواهی رو میرسونه که اونم نمیفهمم چه کاربردی داره. یعنی چون روزنامه خطا کرد باید دفتر اونو آتیش زد نه سفارت رو؟ یا باید تو روزنامه کاریکاتور عقاید اونارو کشید؟
شاید بهتر باشه واسه مثال آوردن بیشتر فکر کرد.

موضوع خیلی واضح تر از این حرفاس. وقتی خودتو، دینتو یا پیغمبرتو خشن نشون دادن، راه اینکه اثبات کنی اشتباه کردن این نیست که سفارتشونو آتیش بزنی یا رو پلاکارد بنویسی "اروپا یازده سپتامبرت تو راهه"، "سر کسایی که به اسلام توهین کردن رو باید قطع کرد" و راه بیفتی تظاهرات کنی. احمق.

شهروند نصف جهانی یه خبر از امروز نقل کرده که سورس اونم ایرناس:
ایرنا:"هوگو چاوز" رييسجمهوري ونزوئلا به آمريكا نسبت به داشتن هرگونه انديشه حمله به ايران به شدت هشدار داد.
چاوز در جمع نمايندگان جنبشهاي اجتماعي جهان در شهر كاراكاس پايتخت ونزوئلا گفت: "من از نزديك ايران و ملت آن را ميشناسم.من به امام خامنهاي، آقاي خاتمي رييسجمهوري سابق و آقاي محمود احمدينژاد رييسجمهوري كنوني ايران ارادت دارم و از توان نظامي كشور آنان آگاهم."
وي با تاكيد براينكه توان نظاميايران بسياربالا است، تصريح كرد: ايران، عراق نيست و نيروهاي نظامي و بسيجي ايران، آمادگي دفاع كامل از كشورشان را دارند.
از اونجایی که بی نهایت حرفهای احمقانه ای به نظر میومد دنبالش گشتم. و خب معلوم شد که تنها حرفی که چاوز زده این بوده که اگه آمریکا به ایران حمله کنه تلفاتش ده برابر عراق خواهد بود. نه ابراز ارادتی به خامنه ای و خاتمی و احمدی نژاد کرده نه از توان بسیجی ها حرفی زده.
میتونین تمام جاهایی که خبر رو نقل کردن رو چک کنین. توی گوگل نیوز و یاهو نیوز.
این تایید حرف چند وقت پیش منه که گفتم رسانه های ایران اخبار رو هر جوری که دلشون میخواد نقل میکنن و هر چی دوست داشته باشن بهش اضافه میکنن. اون دفعه از شرق مثال آوردم. اینم از خبرگذاری رسمیشون.
حالا هی پز بدین که خبرنگار یا نویسنده فلان جایین. لینکهاتون هم جدا کنین بالاشون بنویسین روزنامه نگارها. وقتی مملکت این شکلیه، شرق و روز میشن روزنامه حرفه ای، هر کسی هم چهار تا آشنا داشت یا دو کلمه انگلیسی بلد بود هم میشه روزنامه نگار. آدم ده دقیقه وقت میزاره هزار تا گاف ازتون میگیره.
